I am writing on behalf of the many voices in Astoria who strongly oppose the Vacant Home Excise Tax. We feel it is an unfair tax, targeting a specific group of people who happen to own a second home in Astoria for a variety of reasons.
This isn’t a “tax the rich” proposal, it’s a tax on retirees and the middle class! It would require them to pay $3,000 the first year and $6,000 every year after if they are not residing in the home for a set number of days per year. Talk about city government over-reach!
Plus, every homeowner in Astoria will be required to file an annual declaration proving they meet the requirements. Many homeowners will be forced to sell because they simply cannot afford the extra tax burden, while others, who chose Astoria as a place for their dream vacation home, will move and take their economy-stimulating income with them. Others looking to purchase a second home will most likely look elsewhere.
So please vote no! This is not the answer to Astoria’s housing issues.
